Aspm
Table of Contents
Overview
Aspm (classified across security vendors as Ransom:Win32/Aspm, Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Aspm, and Ransom.Aspm) is a targeted Windows crypto-ransomware family active in corporate extortion attacks. Propagated through spear-phishing payloads delivering malicious document droppers, compromised software supply chains, and brute-forced RDP accounts, Aspm executes high-speed multi-threaded encryption routines across logical drives and connected network storage shares. Aspm executes shell commands to stop database services (such as MSSQL, Oracle, and MySQL) and purge Windows system recovery artifacts via 'vssadmin delete shadows /all /quiet' and 'wbadmin delete catalog -quiet'. Files are encrypted using AES-256 and renamed with unique machine identifiers followed by the '.aspm' extension. Aspm drops ransom notes ('ASPM_README.txt') containing instructions for accessing a Tor negotiation portal to purchase decryption keys.

Tiered Detection Rules (Cisco CAIRN Model)
Modern threat detection requires multi-layered rule engineering. We classify detections into three operational tiers based on signal fidelity:
Tier 1 Primitive Artifact Rule (Fast Triage)
Matches raw strings and file markers. Vulnerable to binary repacking and simple obfuscation.
rule MALWARE_WIN_ASPM_T1_ARTIFACT {
meta:

$s5 = "ransom.aspm" ascii wide nocase
$s6 = "aspm ransomware" ascii wide nocase
condition:

}
Tier 2 Behavioral Context Rule (Process Chains & Sigma)
Tracks parent-child process anomalies and suspicious scripting telemetry. Resilient against file renames.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Ransom:Win32/Aspm?
Aspm is a Windows crypto-ransomware family that encrypts corporate files and databases using AES-256 and RSA cryptography.
How does Aspm disable system recovery mechanisms?
It executes vssadmin and wbadmin commands to delete volume shadow copies and system backup catalogs.
How is Aspm delivered to victim environments?
It is delivered through spear-phishing documents, compromised software updates, and brute-forced RDP connections.
Can files encrypted by Aspm be restored without paying?
Restoration is only possible through verified offline backups, as Aspm uses standard AES-256 with asymmetric RSA key protection.
What defensive measures prevent Aspm infections?
Implement multi-factor authentication on all remote access points, isolate critical database backups, and deploy behavioral EDR monitoring.
How do I remove Aspm from Windows?
Manual removal of Aspm is highly discouraged as it may leave persistence mechanisms intact. We recommend disconnecting the device from the internet and utilizing a professional incident response service or enterprise-grade EDR software to conduct a full forensic sweep.
What are the main symptoms of a Aspm infection?
Symptoms of Aspm can include unexpected system slowness, unauthorized outbound network traffic to unknown IP addresses, disabled security software, and suspicious background processes running from AppData or Temp directories.
