Overview

Ardurk (tracked across threat intelligence repositories under signatures including Ransom:Win32/Ardurk, Trojan-Ransom.Win32.Ardurk, and Ransom.Ardurk) is a targeted Windows crypto-ransomware family designed for rapid local disk and network share encryption. Propagated through compromised Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) sessions, weaponized email loaders, and corporate VPN credential stuffing attacks, Ardurk prioritizes rapid encryption of high-value business assets. Upon execution, Ardurk executes commands via cmd.exe to terminate database, hypervisor, and backup services (such as MSSQL, MySQL, Oracle, and Veeam services) to release file locks on critical business databases. It purges volume shadow copies and system state backups using 'vssadmin delete shadows /all /quiet' and disables Windows automatic boot recovery via 'bcdedit /set {default} bootstatuspolicy ignoreallfailures'. Ardurk then encrypts user documents, financial databases, virtual machine disks, and system archives using AES-256 in CBC mode, appending the '.ardurk' extension to encrypted files. It encrypts the AES session key using an embedded 2048-bit RSA master public key and creates ransom notes ('HOW_TO_RESTORE_ARDURK.txt') in all processed directories.

Tiered Detection Rules (Cisco CAIRN Model)

Modern threat detection requires multi-layered rule engineering. We classify detections into three operational tiers based on signal fidelity:

Tier 1 Primitive Artifact Rule (Fast Triage)

Matches raw strings and file markers. Vulnerable to binary repacking and simple obfuscation.

rule MALWARE_WIN_ARDURK_T1_ARTIFACT {
    meta:
        description = "Tier 1 Primitive Artifact: Raw string matches for Ardurk"
        tier = "T1 - Primitive Artifact"

        date = "2026-10-14"
    strings:
        $s1 = "ardurk" ascii wide nocase
        $s2 = "ransom:win32/ardurk" ascii wide nocase
        $s3 = "trojan-ransom.win32.ardurk" ascii wide nocase
        $s4 = "win32/ardurk" ascii wide nocase
        $s5 = "ransom.ardurk" ascii wide nocase
        $s6 = "ardurk ransomware" ascii wide nocase
    condition:
        uint16(0) == 0x5a4d and any of them
}

Tier 2 Behavioral Context Rule (Process Chains & Sigma)

Tracks parent-child process anomalies and suspicious scripting telemetry. Resilient against file renames.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ransom:Win32/Ardurk?

Ardurk is a targeted Windows crypto-ransomware family that encrypts corporate databases and files using AES-256 and RSA-2048.

How does Ardurk disable Windows system recovery?

It executes vssadmin commands to delete volume shadow copies and bcdedit commands to suppress startup recovery options.

How does Ardurk infect corporate environments?

Attackers deploy Ardurk via compromised RDP credentials, enterprise VPN breaches, and phishing document loaders.

Can files with the .ardurk extension be decrypted for free?

No public decrypter exists because Ardurk uses strong AES-256 encryption with keys protected by an asymmetric RSA master public key.

What steps should be taken during an active Ardurk ransomware attack?

Isolate affected network segments immediately, capture memory images of infected hosts, and restore data from verified air-gapped backups.

How do I remove Ardurk from Windows?

Manual removal of Ardurk is highly discouraged as it may leave persistence mechanisms intact. We recommend disconnecting the device from the internet and utilizing a professional incident response service or enterprise-grade EDR software to conduct a full forensic sweep.

What are the main symptoms of a Ardurk infection?

Symptoms of Ardurk can include unexpected system slowness, unauthorized outbound network traffic to unknown IP addresses, disabled security software, and suspicious background processes running from AppData or Temp directories.
